Guides

Fixed or declining payments?

With fixed payments every installment is the same, but you pay more interest overall. With equal principal the first payments are higher and total interest is lower.

APR

Lenders add origination fees, insurance and other charges; always compare the APR (annual percentage rate) on the loan disclosure.

Frequently asked questions

How is a monthly loan payment calculated?

For fixed payments: payment = amount × rate ÷ (1 − (1 + rate)^−months).

What is an equal principal loan?

You repay the same principal each month and interest shrinks, so the payment goes down.

Which method costs less interest?

Equal principal (declining payments).

Does it include fees and insurance?

No; those vary by lender and are reflected in the APR.
